Image Slots

Required

Primary Product Image

Required
2048×20481:1JPG / PNG / GIF / WEBP85% fill

White or clean neutral background strongly recommended for professional appearance; Shopify does not enforce background color unlike Amazon

Aim for at least 1024x1024 as a hard floor; 2048x2048 allows zoom functionality which directly increases conversions. RGB color mode only, no CMYK. Max file size 20MB but keep under 500KB after compression for fast load times.

Optional

Secondary Product Angle

Optional
2048×20481:1JPG / PNG / WEBP80% fill

Consistent with main image background for a clean gallery experience

Show back, side, and bottom angles. Customers who see multiple angles convert at significantly higher rates. Keep lighting consistent across all alternate shots.

Lifestyle / In-Context Image

Optional
2048×13653:2JPG / PNG / WEBP50% fill

Real-world environment; avoid busy or cluttered backgrounds that distract from the product

Show the product being used by a real person or placed in a realistic environment. This image type typically performs best as the second or third image in your gallery. Avoid stock-photo aesthetics.

Feature Callout Infographic

Optional
2048×20481:1JPG / PNG / WEBP60% fill

Clean background; white or light gray works best to keep text readable

Limit to 4 to 6 callouts per image. Use minimum 24pt font size equivalent at final render. Arrows and lines should point precisely to the feature being described. Export as JPG at 85 quality or PNG if transparency is needed.

Scale Reference Image

Optional
2048×20481:1JPG / PNG / WEBP70% fill

Neutral or white background preferred

Include a common reference object or a human hand for size context. Dimension overlays with actual measurements build trust and reduce size-related returns significantly.

Close-Up Detail Shot

Optional
2048×20481:1JPG / PNG / WEBP95% fill

Neutral or transparent; focus is on material and texture

Use macro or high-magnification photography to show texture, stitching, material quality, or fine print. Critical for apparel, jewelry, and premium goods. Shallow depth of field is acceptable here.

Color or Variant Swatch Image

Optional
800×8001:1JPG / PNG / WEBP90% fill

White or transparent background

Each product variant should have its own dedicated image assigned in the Shopify variant settings. Swatch images should be cropped tightly. Consistency in lighting across all variant images is critical; mismatched lighting makes colors look different and confuses buyers.

Packaging and Unboxing Image

Optional
2048×20481:1JPG / PNG / WEBP75% fill

Clean surface, light background

Show the box, bag, or packaging the customer will actually receive. This sets expectations and reduces negative reviews from customers surprised by plain poly mailers. Especially important for gift-oriented products.

Collection Page Banner

Optional
2560×110021:9JPG / PNG / WEBP40% fill

Brand-appropriate; ensure sufficient contrast for any overlay text

Keep critical content centered and away from the outer 15% of each edge as many themes crop this image on mobile. Compress aggressively; banner images are the single biggest cause of slow Shopify storefronts. Target under 300KB.

Blog or Article Thumbnail

Optional
1200×6281.91:1JPG / PNG / WEBP30% fill

No strict rule; match brand aesthetic

This ratio also covers Open Graph social sharing previews. If you use the same image for blog thumbnails and social meta, this 1200x628 size covers both. Include the article topic visually, not just a logo.

Rejection Reasons

Hard Reject

  • CMYK color mode instead of RGB

Shopify and web browsers render RGB only; CMYK images often display with washed-out or shifted colors. Always export from Photoshop or Lightroom in sRGB color space.

  • File size over 20MB upload limit

Shopify will refuse to upload any single image exceeding 20MB. Beyond the hard limit, files over 1MB significantly slow your storefront; compress all images before uploading using tools like Squoosh or ShortPixel.

  • Unsupported file format such as TIFF, BMP, or RAW

Shopify only accepts JPG, PNG, GIF, and WEBP. Attempting to upload TIFF or RAW files will fail silently or throw an error. Convert to JPG or WEBP before uploading.

Warning

  • Image resolution too low for zoom functionality

Shopify requires at least 1024x1024 to enable product zoom, and anything under 800px on either side looks blurry on modern high-DPI screens. Shoot at the highest resolution your camera allows and downsize intentionally.

  • Transparent PNG background on main product image

Many Shopify themes render transparent backgrounds as black or checkerboard patterns in gallery thumbnails, which looks broken. Use a white or solid-color fill behind your product unless your theme explicitly supports transparency.

  • Inconsistent aspect ratios across product gallery

Mixing portrait, landscape, and square images in a single product gallery creates jagged, uneven layouts in most Shopify themes. Pick one ratio and stick to it for all images in a product listing.

  • Watermarks or third-party branding visible on product images

Watermarks signal low confidence in your brand and look unprofessional to customers. Shopify does not block these but they consistently reduce conversion rates. Remove all watermarks before uploading.

  • Heavily compressed JPG with visible blocking artifacts

Saving JPGs at quality settings below 70 introduces compression artifacts that are obvious to customers and undermine product credibility. Use 80 to 90 quality for product images as a baseline.

  • Collection banner image causing slow page load

Oversized banner images are the most common cause of poor Shopify Core Web Vitals scores, which hurt both SEO and conversion. Banner images should be under 300KB; use WEBP format whenever your theme supports it.

  • Variant images not assigned to the correct variant

If you upload color variant images but do not assign them in the Shopify variant settings, the gallery will not switch images when a customer selects a different color. This is a setup error, not an upload error, but it effectively breaks the listing.

Optimization Tips

  1. 01

Shoot everything at 2048x2048 or larger and compress down. It is far easier to downsize a sharp image than to recover detail from a small one. Use Squoosh.app to compress to WEBP at 80 quality before uploading.

  2. 02

Enable WEBP conversion in your Shopify theme settings or use an app like Crush.pics. WEBP files are typically 25 to 35 percent smaller than equivalent JPGs with no visible quality loss, which directly improves page speed scores.

  3. 03

Name your image files with descriptive, keyword-rich filenames before uploading. Shopify uses the filename and alt text for image SEO. A file named red-leather-wallet-front.jpg beats IMG_4821.jpg every time.

  4. 04

Write unique alt text for every product image through the Shopify media editor. Alt text serves both accessibility and image search traffic. Describe what is literally in the image, including color, material, and use case.

  5. 05

Pick your aspect ratio before your first photo shoot and enforce it across your entire catalog. Changing ratios later means re-shooting or heavy cropping, and inconsistency across products makes your store look unfinished.

  6. 06

For collections with many SKUs, use a bulk image editing tool like Canva, Pixelmator, or a Photoshop action to apply consistent background removal and cropping. Manual editing at scale introduces inconsistency.

  7. 07

Test your product images on a real mobile device before publishing. Over 70 percent of Shopify traffic is mobile. An image that looks great on a 27-inch monitor can lose critical detail on a 6-inch phone screen.

  8. 08

Use your fourth or fifth image slot for social proof content: a screenshot of a review mentioning a specific feature, or a before-and-after comparison. This type of content converts well without requiring ad spend.

  9. 09

For apparel, always include a flat lay, an on-model shot, and a size chart image as the minimum three images per variant. Listings with fewer than three images in apparel see measurably higher return rates.

  10. 10

Check your Shopify theme documentation for the exact image dimensions it uses for collection grids and featured product sections. Many themes hard-crop images to specific ratios, and knowing this in advance prevents important content from being cut off.
