Image Slots

Required

Primary / Hero Image

Required
2000×20001:1JPG / PNG / GIF85% fill

White or clean, uncluttered background strongly recommended for search visibility; solid color or lifestyle acceptable but white converts best for most product categories

Product should fill at least 85% of the frame. Avoid watermarks, borders, or decorative frames. This image appears in search results and is the first impression — no collages or multi-product shots. Minimum 72 DPI but 300 DPI recommended for zoom quality.

Optional

Second Angle / Back View

Optional
2000×20001:1JPG / PNG / GIF80% fill

Match the background style of your main image for visual consistency in your listing gallery

Show the product from a different angle — back, side, bottom, or interior. Buyers expect to see all sides before purchasing handmade or vintage items. Consistent lighting and background across all angle shots builds trust.

Detail / Close-Up Shot

Optional
2000×20001:1JPG / PNG / GIF90% fill

Neutral or complementary background that doesn't compete with the detail being shown

Macro or tight crop showing texture, material quality, stitching, clasp, grain, glaze, or whatever makes your craftsmanship worth the price. This image often converts fence-sitters. Sharp focus is non-negotiable here.

Lifestyle / In-Use Shot

Optional
2000×20001:1JPG / PNG / GIF60% fill

Real-world environment — home setting, worn on model, styled flat lay. No plain white background for lifestyle shots.

Show the product being used or worn in context. For home goods, style it in a room. For jewelry, put it on a real person. Etsy buyers are highly visual and Pinterest-driven — lifestyle shots spike saves and shares. Natural light works extremely well here.

Size / Scale Reference Shot

Optional
2000×20001:1JPG / PNG / GIF70% fill

Clean, uncluttered background so the scale reference reads clearly

One of the most important secondary images for handmade goods. Place product next to a common object (hand, coin, ruler, coffee mug) OR overlay clean text with dimensions. Sizing confusion is the number-one reason for returns and negative reviews on Etsy.

Infographic / Spec Callout

Optional
2000×20001:1JPG / PNG60% fill

Light, clean background — white or soft pastel works best so text callouts are readable

Use clean, minimal typography to call out materials, dimensions, care instructions, or customization options. Do not cram too much text — 3 to 5 callout points maximum. Avoid clipart or cheesy stock graphics. Think clean Canva or Adobe template, not a 2009 eBay listing.

Color / Variant Display

Optional
2000×20001:1JPG / PNG / GIF75% fill

White or neutral background so color accuracy reads correctly across different screens

If you offer multiple colors, materials, or styles, show all options in one image or dedicate individual slots to each variant. Etsy's variation thumbnails are small — a clear variant overview image reduces buyer confusion and cuts down on messages asking 'do you have this in blue?'

Packaging / Unboxing Shot

Optional
2000×20001:1JPG / PNG / GIF70% fill

Clean surface — white, wood, linen, or marble all work well for packaging shots

Etsy shoppers frequently buy as gifts. Showing your packaging — tissue paper, ribbon, branded box, thank-you card — directly addresses the gift-ready question without them having to ask. This image can meaningfully increase conversion for gift-category items.

Process / Behind-the-Scenes Shot

Optional
2000×20001:1JPG / PNG / GIF50% fill

Authentic workshop, studio, or making environment — this is not the place for a staged white background

Unique to Etsy's handmade culture — a photo of your hands at the wheel, your studio, or materials mid-process builds emotional connection and reinforces the handmade premium. Not essential for every listing but powerful for brand-building and standing out from resellers.

Additional Supplemental Image

Optional
2000×20001:1JPG / PNG / GIF65% fill

Match tone and style of the rest of your listing gallery

Use any remaining slots for styled flat lays, seasonal context shots, comparison images, or customer-style inspiration. Every filled slot increases the time buyers spend on your listing, which Etsy's algorithm rewards. Never leave slots empty if you have usable imagery.

Rejection Reasons

Hard Reject

  • Image is below 2000px on the shortest side — Etsy's zoom feature breaks and the listing looks amateurish in search thumbnails

  • Watermarks, logos, or copyright text overlaid on the main image — Etsy explicitly prohibits this and it tanks click-through rates anyway

  • Image contains nudity or sexually suggestive content without being listed in the appropriate adult content category

  • Product shown is clearly different from what is described in the listing — misrepresentation violates Etsy policy and triggers buyer protection claims

  • Image stolen from another seller or stock photo site without rights — Etsy acts on DMCA takedowns quickly and repeat violations result in shop suspension

Warning

  • Collage or multi-image grid used as the main hero image — destroys thumbnail readability in search and is against Etsy's main image best practices

  • Heavy border or decorative frame added around the main image — reduces effective product area and looks unprofessional in the search grid

  • Image is blurry, out of focus, or heavily compressed with visible JPEG artifacts — buyers interpret poor photo quality as poor product quality

  • Main image uses a busy, cluttered background that makes it hard to identify the product at thumbnail size

  • Misleading lifestyle prop usage — e.g., a mug shown styled with food where the food is not included, with no disclaimer — leads to disputes

  • Text-heavy infographic used as the main image instead of a clean product shot — performs poorly in search and may be flagged during manual review

Optimization Tips

  1. 01

Shoot at 2000x2000px minimum but deliver 3000x3000px files when possible. Etsy's zoom is generous and high-res images give buyers confidence they can't see elsewhere. You can always downsample; you can't recover detail you didn't capture.

  2. 02

Your main image is square on desktop but gets cropped to roughly 4:3 on mobile search. Keep your product centered and avoid placing critical visual information in the very top or bottom 15% of the frame.

  3. 03

Shoot in natural window light before you invest in a studio setup. A north-facing window on an overcast day beats most artificial lighting rigs for product photography. Avoid direct sunlight — it creates harsh shadows and blows out highlights.

  4. 04

White backgrounds are not mandatory on Etsy the way they are on Amazon, but they do perform consistently well across most categories. Test one white-background and one lifestyle main image using Etsy's A/B listing tool if you have it, or simply track stats manually over two weeks each.

  5. 05

Compress your images before uploading. Target under 1MB per image using a tool like Squoosh, TinyPNG, or Lightroom's export optimizer. Large files slow load time, and slow pages lose mobile shoppers.

  6. 06

Add alt text to every image in your listing. Etsy supports image alt text and it feeds into both Etsy's internal search and Google image search. Describe what's in the photo using natural language and relevant keywords — don't keyword-stuff.

  7. 07

Never screenshot someone else's listing for inspiration and accidentally leave metadata or partial watermarks in your uploaded file. Always start from your original RAW or high-res master file.

  8. 08

For physical products, always include at least one size reference image. The number-one buyer complaint in Etsy reviews across all categories is 'smaller than I expected.' A hand or a ruler next to the product costs nothing to add and prevents bad reviews.

  9. 09

Use consistent lighting, background color, and editing style across all your listings — not just within one listing. A cohesive shop aesthetic improves favoriting behavior and repeat purchases because shoppers recognize your work in their feed.

  10. 10

GIF files are supported but use them sparingly and only when motion genuinely adds value — like showing a locket opening or a scarf's drape. Autoplay GIFs that are too large will load slowly and hurt mobile UX more than they help.
